Sprouting Organic Produce and Raw Cannabis Seeds

I was drawn west and left Buffalo, NY at 23 years old to move to Colorado – this city girl quickly learned the in’s and out’s of country cooking. Sure, in Buffalo we had apple and cherry trees in my back yard and a slew of tomato plants to feast on. I grew up with uber organic parents, so I knew what it was like to be sustainable and how to urban forage with a low waste approach in the kitchen. However, going to Colorado immediately immensed me into a new level of country cooking, self-sustainability, and foraging.

At first, I turned my nose up to a lot of things with the thoughts of, “I am NOT doing that. You can just buy it.” But over time, the rural approach to life won me over. If genetics could be passed down in the form of memories, I was slowly becoming a super earth crunchy granola person like my parents! Who knew?

Throughout my 10 year journey in Colorado, I lived on the Front Range and then in the mountains. Now, living in a rural suburb of Seattle for the past 2 years, has kicked that country side cooking and sustainability thing up to next level status. I even have my own compost bin that my husband built me from left over scrap wood pallets. Too much, I know! ✋?

But seriously, since we are all facing some really hard food challenges right now with the Coronavirus (I literally could not get yeast or flour for almost 3 weeks) – I want to share with you all the tips and tricks of a sustainable zero-waste country kitchen. These things helped me tremendously through my journey in life and I hope that they help you! Follow the hashtag #RawCannabisCuisine

How to Sprout Seeds

Mise en place:

  • Organic dry seeds, cannabis seeds, or organic seeds from fresh fruit or veggies (GMO seeds collected from fresh produce will sprout but will not produce. They are engineered to self-destruct.)
  • Filtered water
  • 1 glass bowl
  • 1 warm windowsill

Directions:

  • Place clean organic seeds into a shallow bowl of water. And place onto a warm sunny spot on a windowsill.
  • Change out the water every 2 days until they sprout (about 2 weeks).
  • Once they sprout, transfer to Rockwool or dirt containers. Continue the growing process from there.

Tips:

  • Any seeds that do not sprout are considered duds and should be discarded.
  • If you have cats or dogs, allow them to drink from the bowl. The saliva helps to propagate the seeds faster (weird, but true).
  • You must change out the water otherwise you risk the chance of mold or other pathogens growing on the seeds while they seed.
